Crisis in the steel towns 3 - Corby: Belated attempt to diversify
Workers fear strike will cut redundancy money
....
Having now bowed to the inevitable, the steelworkers’ main worry is over the proposed national strike set for January 2, which they fear will affect their redundancy payments. “I am not against the principle of the strike, because 2 per cent is a ridiculous offer “, says Mr Ken Gosland, an intelligent, gentle-speaking Scot who is senior convener of the Electrical, Electronic Plumbing and TeIecommunications Union and chairman of the Joint Trades Union Policy Group. “But if our lads find themselves made redundant in the middle of a strike, they could not claim continuous employment and could lose a lot of money. Frankly, the timing of this strike has put us in an impossible position.”

Young girl donates birthday money to Red Cross
By Jason Smith, The Register

Berwick's Brooke Godsland celebrated her birthday on Feb. 13 like a typical eight-year-old, with cake, candles and over a dozen of her closest classmates, friends and family.

Weeks later, Brooke's mother Angela Beck asks her daughter to recall the presents she received from her friends.

"Money!" she exclaims. "Enough to buy a bicycle."

But the $165 isn't for a bicycle or a platoon of Barbies.

Since Boxing Day, Brooke says she has been worried about the people of South East Asia who have suffered since tsunamis devastated that area of the world.

"I was sad for the people and I just wanted to do something for them for my birthday and mom gave me an idea and I said yup."

The idea was to ask birthday partygoers to forgo the toy aisle on Brooke's birthday and instead make a small donation to the Red Cross.

The money they recieved was more than they had expected, Beck says.

She said the family is very proud of their daughter for being so generous.

Her concern was what her daughter's reaction would be at the end of the day, when left with a just few presents from friends and relatives and not the typical hull some eight-year-olds get to take back to their rooms at the end of a successful birthday bash.

"I was concerned with how she would feel afterwards. That's why I asked her if she would do it again and she says that she would. That's what makes us the most proud."

In fact, Brooke notes happily, a number of her friends are planning to make Red Cross donations a part of their next birthday party too.

"It would be excellent if it caught on," her mom says, to which Brooke chimes in, "And we could tell them where the Red Cross is, so they don't get lost too."

Mom kindly explains to Brooke that they did not get lost. They were just misplaced momentarily.

When they did finally arrive at the Red Cross office in the Kentville Industrial Park, Brooke presented the money to "a lady."

"She said all the people would be really happy to get the money."

Brooke's award for her generosity was a trip to the Natural History Museum in Halifax to view the dinosaur exhibit.

When asked about her career of choice when she has a few more birthdays under her belt, Brooke exclaims, "A paleontologist," with perfect pronunciation, "Or an archeologist."

With her keen interest in looking into past, Brooke might always remember the day she turned 8 and passed on a new bike to help strangers halfway around the world.

Tributes to former mayor

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former mayor and councillor who worked tirelessly for the community.

Kenneth Gosland died suddenly on February 2 at Kettering General Hospital aged 72. Mr Gosland will be remembered by many as Kettering Mayor and a councillor for the Avondale ward. He served as a borough councillor from 1980 to 1999 and was mayor, with his wife Joan as mayoress, from 1987 to 1988.

His daughter Dawn said: "He was great. He had a great sense of humour and I still spoke to him every day. "He was a great granddad and he will be very sadly missed." Mr Gosland moved to St John's Road in Kettering from Glasgow towards the end of the 1960s to work as an electrician at the steel factories in Corby. This followed about 10 years in the Merchant Navy where he also worked as an electrician and met his future wife, who was a nurse at the time.

Mr Gosland retired when he was 60 years old after spending 25 years working in Corby. Dawn said: "Both my parents had very strong beliefs about working to get things done in the community. "They wanted to help people who needed help. "My dad wanted to help make a difference and to help people who had problems."

In his spare time Mr Gosland enjoyed playing short mat bowls, and formed a bowls club on the Ise Lodge estate. Dawn said: "He did a lot of good for local people and there will be a lot of people that will certainly miss him."

Another former Kettering Mayor Matt Lynch said: "He was a wonderful man and I had tremendous respect for him. "When I was a new councillor he gave me lots of guidance. "If there were more councillors like Kenneth, Kettering would be a better place." Another friend, Brian Goosey, said: "Kenneth was a dear friend and he will be missed by a lot of people."

Mr Gosland's funeral will take place at Kettering Parish Church on Monday at midday. The family has requested family flowers only, with donations for Cransley Hospice.
